Gadchiroli tops Maharashtra in cutting road accident deaths, Nagpur second

Two districts of Vidarbha, Gadchiroli and Nagpur, have done well in curbing road accidents. Tribal-majority Gadchiroli ranked first in the state in reducing the rate of deaths in road accidents. Nagpur district came second.

Gadchiroli recorded a full 26 per cent fall in the rate of deaths from accidents, which put it at the top in the state. According to the figures, the district recorded 129 fatal accidents in 2025. In 2026 the administration has brought that number down to 96.

Notable work has also been done in Nagpur district to reduce accident deaths. The number of fatal accidents here has fallen from 813 last year to 708 this year. Last year the district recorded 385 deaths in accidents. This year the figure was 295, a 23 per cent fall in the rate of deaths. The total number of road accidents in Nagpur district has also fallen by 13 per cent. Nagpur Rural also figures among the state's top five districts in reducing accident deaths.

Among the other districts, Dharashiv recorded a 21 per cent fall in the rate of accident deaths and ranked third. Deaths from accidents in Dharashiv fell from 335 to 264. Nashik city and Akola each recorded a 20 per cent fall in the rate of accident deaths.

The number of people seriously injured in Nagpur district has also dropped slightly. Last year 855 people were seriously injured, while this year the figure is 844.

Across Maharashtra, deaths in road accidents fell by 4 per cent between January and October 2026. The number of accident deaths in the state fell from 13,175 to 12,645. The improvement is believed to be due to road safety measures and public awareness campaigns.
