The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation is preparing to demolish the CIDCO-era water tank in Sector 23 of Koparkhairane and build new ones in its place. The tank is about 35 years old and has weakened. A ground-level tank and an elevated tank will be built in its place.

The work is estimated to cost about Rs 11 crore 6 lakh. A proposal to give financial approval to the tender will be placed before the corporation's standing committee, which meets on Thursday, October 22.

The old elevated water tank in Sector 23 had a capacity of 2.5 million litres. A structural examination found that it had weakened and could not be repaired. It has therefore been recommended that it be removed and a new tank built. The examination was carried out by IIT Bombay.

At present, water to Sectors 22 and 23 is delivered from Sector 18 through boosting. As a result, housing societies at the far end of the area receive water at low pressure and in less than the required quantity. Residents have complained about this repeatedly. A plan for a new water tank has been drawn up to find a lasting solution to the problem.

According to the proposal, a ground-level tank of 0.75 million litres and an elevated tank of 1.1 million litres will be built. The work will also include a pump house, an operator room, water pipelines of various diameters and the fitting of valves.

An e-tender process was held for the work and four tenders were received. M/s Mangalmurti Enterprises bid at the estimated rate. M/s Madhavrao N. Kalbhor bid 7.50 per cent above the estimate and M/s Reliance Construction bid 9 per cent above. The tender of M/s MD Infrastructure was found ineligible. M/s Mangalmurti Enterprises thus had the lowest rate.

The tender amount for the work is Rs 9 crore 37 lakh 34,675. With 18 per cent GST added, the total expected expenditure is Rs 11 crore 6 lakh 6,917. The plan is to complete the work in 10 months, excluding the monsoon. Administrative approval for the work has already been given, and financial approval will now be sought from the corporation's standing committee.
