A young woman in the Tehsil police station limits of Nagpur has alleged that she was made a victim of cyber blackmail on the pretext of a job. The accused are alleged to have gained her trust through an online acquaintance, then blackmailed her using an obscene video recording and extorted Rs 3 lakh. They are also alleged to have threatened to make the video viral on social media and demanded Rs 10 lakh. Tehsil police have registered a case on the victim's complaint and begun an investigation.
According to the information available, the woman had for the past few years been using various social media apps and educational websites for work and entertainment. It was during this period that she came to know the accused online.
The main accused, Irfan Ali, allegedly claimed to be a big businessman and a leader of a political organisation in Uttar Pradesh, and assured the woman of a good job. On that pretext, her personal and other required documents were taken from her.
According to the complaint, the accused used to pressure the woman to engage in obscene conversation during video calls. She was allegedly induced to commit an obscene act on a video call, and the screen was recorded without her knowledge.
The recording was later allegedly used to blackmail her. Threatening to make the video viral on social media and to kill her, the accused demanded Rs 10 lakh from her.
Fearing that the video would go viral, the woman paid the accused Rs 3 lakh, it is alleged. She nonetheless continued to receive threats. The accused are also alleged to have misused the documents obtained on the promise of a job elsewhere and to have mentally harassed the woman.
According to police records, the names of people linked to Mohali, Chandigarh, Goa, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh have emerged in the case. The accused are said to include Kiran Mittal, Payal Destiny, Irfan Ali, Virendra Rana and Nitin Jain, among others.
Police are examining various aspects of the case, including the role of the accused, the alleged online blackmail and the possible misuse of the documents.
A case has been registered under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act (IT Act). Tehsil police are conducting further investigation. The allegations and the role of the accused will be established only after the investigation.
