Tehsil police in Nagpur have busted an alleged extortion plot in which a man was to be framed in a false case and made to pay Rs 3 crore. Police have arrested the alleged conspirator, Aditya Sureshchandra Gupta (30), from Agra in Uttar Pradesh.
According to police, a 19-year-old woman was offered Rs 5 lakh to file the complaint. DCP Zone-3 Rahul Madne shared details of the case. Police are now looking into the other aspects of the alleged conspiracy.
Police said the woman who filed the complaint lives in the Mominpura area. She makes reels and videos related to entertainment and studies, and had been active on the Mauka application for a long time. She came to know Gupta through the app.
A few days ago, a case was registered on the woman's complaint against four people, including Irfan Ali, a resident of Rajasthan. The complaint alleged that Irfan claimed to have political influence, tempted her with the offer of a job and incited her to engage in virtual sex. It also mentioned a threat to make a video go viral.
During the investigation, Tehsil police sought details of the woman's mobile phone to gather evidence of the alleged obscene video. She was called to the police station to record her statement. Gupta also came to the station with her.
Police said that during questioning, Gupta would himself answer the questions put to the woman. He tried to influence the investigation by citing his standing in political and corporate circles and his contacts with senior officials. This aroused police suspicion.
Police Sub-Inspector Sandeep Bhitale then questioned the woman separately, under the guidance of Inspector Sanjay Mewe. According to police, the woman became nervous. She denied knowing Irfan Ali or having spoken to him on social media. She allegedly said the complaint had been filed at Gupta's behest.
Police investigation revealed that Gupta had offered the woman Rs 5 lakh to get the complaint filed against Irfan. According to police, the plan was to implicate Irfan with allegedly fabricated evidence and extort Rs 3 crore from him.
Police arrested Gupta from Agra. After questioning, he was produced in court, which ordered that he be kept in police custody.
According to Nagpur police, the investigation has also found that similar cases are registered against Gupta in Pune and Delhi. Tehsil police are probing the alleged conspiracy, Gupta's role in getting the complaint filed, and other possible links.
