Stones hit Nagpur-Mumbai Duronto, three AC coach windows smashed
RPF and GRP are investigating after stones shattered windows of three AC coaches on the Nagpur-Mumbai Duronto Express on Friday night
The Nagpur-Mumbai Duronto Express, train number 12290, came under a stoning attack on Friday night. The incident took place between Borkhedi and Sindi stations. Around 8:27 pm on the night of September 25, as the train was crossing Borkhedi station, something or a stone from outside is reported to have struck the windows.
The stoning cracked the window panes of coaches A-1, B-2 and B-5. The railways said there is no report of any passenger being injured or any other damage.
According to the railways, the incident occurred in the Borkhedi-Sindi section beyond Borkhedi station. The train's escort staff and passengers also said they heard something strike the windows from outside and felt a jolt around 8:27 pm. The railways are still trying to establish the exact spot where the incident occurred and the direction from which the stone came.
On receiving word of the incident, RPF and GRP teams swung into action and carried out a search operation along the railway track in the Borkhedi-Sindi section, roughly between kilometre markers 803 and 796. Searches were also conducted in the Borkhedi and Brahmani village areas. Police questioned the local police patil and villagers there, but the initial investigation did not turn up any suspect or firm lead. The probe to pinpoint exactly where the incident took place is still ongoing.
The railway police have registered a case against an unidentified person under Section 153 of the Railways Act. The case was registered as crime number 325/2026 at 2:55 am on September 26. Police are now working to identify the person who threw the stones and to establish the exact location of the incident.
Stone-throwing incidents on running trains are considered a serious safety concern for the railways. In this case, windows of three AC coaches were damaged. The railways and security agencies are currently taking the investigation forward with information gathered from the site and local inputs.
