Nagpur Metro Phase 2: first I-girder installed at Hingna station
Maha Metro has begun placing I-girders at Hingna Mount View station on the 6.4 km Reach-3A corridor.
Work on Nagpur Metro Phase 2 has taken another step forward. Maha Metro has begun installing the first I-girder at Hingna Mount View station. The work is being carried out on the 6.4 kilometre corridor from Lokmanya Nagar to Hingna, also known as Reach-3A. A total of seven elevated stations will be built on this corridor. Construction of the stations began in March 2025.
According to Maha Metro officials, I-girders are being installed at every station. Each span has 15 girders, of which nine are placed at concourse level and six at platform level. Concourse-level girders weigh between 27 and 45 tonnes, while platform-level girders weigh between 37 and 45 tonnes. Each station will require a total of 60 I-girders, of which 36 will be at concourse level and 24 at platform level. Finished girders are transported by heavy trailers along fixed routes to the site where they are installed.
Heavy cranes are being used to install the girders. The three middle concourse-level girders in each span will be installed using two cranes with a capacity of 80 tonnes each. The remaining girders will be installed using a single large crane with a capacity of 500 tonnes, allowing the heavy structures to be placed safely on the elevated stations.
Maha Metro officials said the plan is to complete girder installation, slab construction and the remaining structural work at both levels at each station in about 45 days. Work is under way simultaneously at several stations to keep the project on schedule.
The concourse level will have several facilities for passengers, including ticket counters, lifts, escalators, toilets and a childcare facility. This level will also serve as a transfer point between entry-exit and the platforms. Entry-exit work is currently under way at all seven stations on the corridor.
According to the project schedule, the first 4 kilometre stretch of Reach-3A is targeted to open by August 2027.
