Nagpur man with criminal past held for trying to knife his mother
A 42-year-old man with seven prior cases was arrested in Nagpur after allegedly trying to attack his mother with a knife over money for alcohol
Police in Nagpur have arrested a 42-year-old man with a criminal history on charges of trying to attack his mother with a knife following an argument at a Shiv Bhojan Thali centre in the Tahsil police station area. Police took swift action and detained the accused.
The accused has been identified as Sachin Taklikar. The incident took place on Wednesday at a Shiv Bhojan Thali centre in the Kumbharpura area, which offers subsidised meals to the public and is regularly visited by many local residents.
According to police, the accused's mother, 66-year-old Leela Bai Taklikar, was at the centre when Sachin arrived. An argument broke out between the two over money, police said. The dispute was initially verbal but soon turned serious.
Police said Sachin used to demand money from his mother to buy alcohol and would harass her repeatedly over this. He also frequently quarrelled with her over the fact that he was unmarried, police said, adding that these two issues kept tension simmering between mother and son.
During the incident, the accused allegedly abused his mother and threatened to kill her. The argument escalated to the point where he allegedly pulled out a knife and tried to attack her, police said. The incident created panic and confusion among those present.
Lalita Nimbe, a woman employee working at the Shiv Bhojan centre, intervened at that point. She showed courage and snatched the knife from the accused's hand, which is said to have averted a major tragedy. Her quick action is credited with saving Leela Bai Taklikar from a serious attack.
After receiving the complaint, Tahsil police arrested Sachin and registered a case against him under the relevant legal sections. Police have collected evidence from the scene and begun further action.
According to police records, the accused has seven previous cases registered against him and is said to have already spent 16 years in jail. He had come out of prison only last year after serving a sentence in a murder case. Given his criminal history, police have treated the incident seriously.
The accused is currently back in police custody in connection with the attempt to attack his mother, and Tahsil police are investigating further.
