Police in Nagpur have arrested Khatib Ansari Gaffar Ansari, accused of demanding Rs 10,000 a month from a neighbour and threatening to kill the man's son.

A case of extortion and bullying has come to light in Nagpur, where a man is accused of demanding a monthly payment from a neighbour for the right to live in the locality. The case is from the Takiya Diwan Shah area, under the limits of Tehsil police station.

The complainant, Syed Asif Ali, and the accused, Khatib Ansari Gaffar Ansari, live in the same locality, as neighbours. Ansari is a history-sheeter who is alleged to pick quarrels with people and threaten them repeatedly.

According to the allegation, on the night of October 30 Ansari threatened Ali's elder son on the road. He is alleged to have told him plainly that if the family wanted to live in the locality, it would have to pay Rs 10,000 every month, or be ready to face the consequences.

On November 2, Ansari is alleged to have called Ali directly on his mobile phone and demanded Rs 10,000 every month as extortion money. He is also alleged to have threatened to kill the son if the amount was not paid.

The continuing threats left Ali's entire family living in fear. Ali finally gathered his courage and lodged a complaint at Tehsil police station.

The police registered a case and arrested Ansari. They are now investigating the matter further.

The complaint thus refers to two incidents. The first, on the night of October 30, involves the alleged threat to the son on the road. The second, on November 2, involves the alleged demand for money from the father over the phone. The same amount, Rs 10,000 a month, was demanded both times. The threat to kill the son is alleged to have been made during the phone call. The complainant and the accused live in the same locality. The police are now investigating both incidents.
