Government Railway Police recovered Rs 1.40 crore from the bag of a passenger who got off the Jan Shatabdi Express at Kharagpur and was heading for Howrah; police are investigating.
The Government Railway Police (GRP) recovered Rs 1.40 crore in cash from a passenger's bag at Kharagpur railway station in West Bengal. The passenger has been named as Rahul Soni. He was travelling by the Jan Shatabdi Express. A video of the GRP action is being widely shared on social media.
According to the information available, Soni got off at Kharagpur station and set out to go to Howrah. GRP personnel became suspicious of him and detained him. When the bag was opened, Rs 1.40 crore in cash was found and seized. The GRP personnel themselves were stunned at the sight of such a large sum.
Soni is said to have arrived at Kharagpur station at around 11 am and was looking at a train going to Howrah when he was stopped. Police took him into custody, made him sit within the station premises and questioned him.
The amount in the bag was so large that the GRP had to bring in a note-counting machine. Police began counting the Rs 1.40 crore at the station itself. A large crowd gathered at Kharagpur station once news of the seizure spread.
The question now is where Soni got such a large sum and where he was taking it. The GRP is investigating both. Further inquiry into the case is continuing.
The video of the action is being shared widely on social media. One post says the GRP caught Soni, who had alighted from the Jan Shatabdi, just as he was trying to leave for Howrah, and that the bag was full of bundles of notes when opened. People on social media are also praising the GRP personnel.
Police have not yet said what the source of the money is. Until the investigation is complete, nothing is clear about how Soni came to have so much cash. The picture will emerge only from the GRP's questioning and inquiry.
