The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation, or MSRTC, is preparing a major entry into the AC luxury sleeper bus segment. The corporation is considering adding around 200 premium buses to its fleet to compete with private buses that have built a strong hold on long-distance routes.

If the plan goes ahead, it could significantly change long-distance travel for passengers using state transport. The fleet will include AC sleeper and luxury buses, with MSRTC focusing on improving comfort, safety, technology and passenger service.

In Nagpur, the Nagpur division has sent a proposal to start new AC sleeper services on the Nagpur-Mumbai and Nagpur-Pune corridors. Both routes have been identified as major long-distance corridors with high passenger demand.

According to local MSRTC officials, the proposal has been sent to the corporation's Mumbai headquarters. How many buses the Nagpur division eventually gets will be decided by headquarters after assessing demand and operational requirements.

The move is being seen as a major shift in MSRTC's long-distance strategy, given that private luxury buses already have a strong hold on intercity passengers. Officials say the aim is to win back passengers who currently choose private operators by offering better comfort, safety, modern technology and reliable service under the MSRTC banner.

The corporation is also planning to induct Volvo buses on a large scale, known for their advanced suspension systems, passenger comfort and better safety technology. The new fleet is expected to offer a far more premium experience than regular state transport buses.

Departing from its earlier operating model, MSRTC is considering bringing in a private agency for passenger hospitality work. Trained staff will be deployed to assist passengers, maintain cleanliness and meet basic needs during travel. According to officials, drivers will continue to be MSRTC employees as before. This arrangement will be similar to the contract-based model used in the corporation's Shivai-e electric buses, combining MSRTC drivers with a privately managed passenger service to improve the experience without outsourcing the core driving operation.

For journeys of more than 250 kilometres and five to six hours or longer, MSRTC is proposing 45-seater premium luxury buses. For night travel, the corporation is considering introducing 30-berth and 45-berth sleeper buses to let passengers cover long distances more comfortably. Sleeper buses could prove especially important on the Nagpur-Mumbai and Nagpur-Pune routes, where night travel is a major option for passengers looking to avoid the cost or hassle of flights.

MSRTC is also preparing to strengthen its digital booking system for the new service. Passengers will be able to book seats through the corporation's online reservation platform, with a proposal to also make bookings available on private digital travel platforms. Passengers will be able to check routes, departure timings and seat availability on their mobile phones, making the new service more convenient for those used to private bus-booking apps. The aim is to narrow the gap in technology and convenience between MSRTC and private luxury bus operators.

The final route plan will be prepared after assessing factors such as passenger demand, existing MSRTC services, distance, travel time and financial feasibility. The corporation will look at major routes within the state as well as select inter-state corridors where demand for private luxury buses is currently high. For Nagpur, the proposed Nagpur-Mumbai and Nagpur-Pune services could offer passengers both the reliability of state transport and private-sector-style luxury. With the proposal for 200 AC luxury buses in its first phase, MSRTC's strategy shows the corporation looking to move beyond its old image and compete directly in a segment that has so far been dominated by private operators.
