Police have arrested a man accused of trying to spread panic by firing in the air at Hasanbagh, in the Nandanvan police station area of Nagpur. The sound of gunshots was heard around midnight on Thursday, causing alarm across the Nandanvan area.

Police reached the spot as soon as they were informed and began an investigation. The name of the accused, Roshan Gaikwad alias Gotya, emerged in the probe. Police arrested him from Wani. Further questioning and investigation revealed that nine cases are already registered against Gaikwad.

Meanwhile, Nandanvan police traced the number of the car and registered a case against its driver. Police are searching for the driver, who is yet to be arrested.

Police's initial assessment is that Gaikwad has a dispute with a criminal from Hasanbagh itself, and that the incident arose from it. This is only a preliminary assessment by the police. The incident has once again unnerved the city, and there is some fear among people in the neighbourhood.

Nagpur is the home district of state Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Three incidents of firing have occurred in the district in the past two months, raising questions about law and order in the city once again.

The first was on August 26. Shots were fired at midnight at the house of Congress corporator Shubham Motghare in the Shravannagar area of Bhandewadi. In that case, police went through a large amount of CCTV footage and arrested seven accused.

The second was on the night of September 10. In Gotal-Panjri, in the Beltarodi police station area, a shot was fired during a quarrel over an old money dealing. Kartik Dharmik, who is involved in property dealing, was injured.

Now shots have been fired in the air at midnight beneath the Hasanbagh flyover, a public place. The safety of the city's residents has once again become a subject of discussion.
