A 28-year-old man died during treatment on Tuesday afternoon in the Belatarodi police station area of Nagpur. He was allegedly beaten by a mob on suspicion of trying to burgle a house in Model Mill Society in New Manish Nagar. His alleged accomplice fled the spot, while police have detained three people in connection with the assault.

The deceased has been identified as Sumedh Rajendra Gajbhiye (28), a resident of Narsala. The incident is said to have occurred at around 1.45 pm.

According to preliminary information, two youths allegedly entered the house of Usha Devidas Dharmik, 61, who lives in Model Mill Society. One of them allegedly held a knife near the woman's neck and tried to snatch her mangalsutra. The woman is said to have resisted and raised an alarm. The accused allegedly managed to take away only a broken piece of the mangalsutra before fleeing.

Hearing the noise, the woman's daughter-in-law came into the hall. The youths allegedly demanded jewellery and cash from her as well. She is said to have gone into a room on the pretext of checking on her child, locked the door from inside and alerted her husband and neighbours.

The woman's son then arrived with his friends and neighbours, and a search began in the surrounding area for the two youths.

During the search, people spotted Sumedh Gajbhiye and his alleged accomplice Deepak Patil near a two-wheeler some distance away. Suspecting that they were the youths who had entered the woman's house, people surrounded them. A crowd quickly gathered and the two were allegedly beaten. Belatarodi police reached the spot on being informed.

Police detained three people allegedly involved in the assault and took the injured Sumedh into custody. Meanwhile, Deepak Patil allegedly fled the spot.

Police took Sumedh to Belatarodi police station. When his condition worsened there, Police Inspector Naikwad sent him to the Government Medical College and Hospital for examination and treatment. Doctors declared him dead after examining him.

After news of the death spread, tension prevailed in the Belatarodi area. A crowd gathered near the police station and the spot of the incident, following which additional police personnel were deployed as a precaution.

Senior officers, including Ajni division ACP Narendra Hiwarey, Crime Branch ACP Vaibhav Jadhav, DCP Rashmita Rao, Crime Branch DCP Deepak Agrawal, Additional Commissioner of Police Vasant Pardeshi and Joint Commissioner of Police Naveenchandra Reddy, reached Belatarodi police station with police personnel.

Police have detained three suspects in the alleged mob assault and have begun searching for Deepak Patil. Investigating officers are examining the entire sequence of events, including the identity of the youths who allegedly entered the house and the circumstances in which the crowd caught and beat them. Further investigation is under way.
