A young man has died in suspicious circumstances in Nagpur's Beltarodi area. He was accused of posing as a delivery boy, entering an elderly woman's house and attempting a robbery. He has been identified as Sumedh Rajendra Gajbhiye, 28, a resident of Narsala.

The incident took place at Prithviraj Society in the Beltarodi police station area. Around 2.30 pm on Tuesday, Sumedh reached the society on a motorcycle with his associate Deepak Patil. The two were reportedly wearing T-shirt-like clothes resembling those of food delivery workers.

The two are alleged to have gone to the house of Usha Devidas Dharmik, 61, and got her to open the door on the pretext of delivering a parcel. As soon as the door opened, Sumedh is alleged to have barged in, threatened the woman with a knife and tried to snatch her chain.

When the woman raised an alarm, her son arrived and caught Sumedh. Neighbours who heard the shouting also gathered and surrounded the two young men.

On being informed, Beltarodi police reached the spot and took Sumedh into custody. Police said that during initial questioning Sumedh allegedly admitted to being involved in the crime. Police also said he allegedly stated that he had given the stolen goods to his associate.

After questioning, police took him for a medical examination. During this, Sumedh's condition worsened and he lost consciousness. He was taken to hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

After his death, there is talk in the area that he had been beaten up. Police have categorically denied any such incident. The actual cause of death is expected to become clear only after the post-mortem report arrives, and the report is awaited.

Police are investigating the case further. The allegations against Sumedh are based on police accounts and the complaint, and no conclusion has yet emerged on the cause of his death.
