A homemade ubtan of roasted pulses, rice, flaxseed, almonds and neem leaves can be used for the traditional abhyang snan on Diwali.
The Diwali festival begins with Vasubaras. These days there is an atmosphere of joy and enthusiasm everywhere. From cleaning the house to preparing festive dishes, everything is made ready, and special attention is paid to one's appearance as well.
To add glow to the face, many women go to beauty parlours for expensive facials and various beauty treatments. However, repeated use of chemical products for skin care should be avoided.
Abhyang snan is taken on Diwali, and applying ubtan during it is a tradition that has continued since olden times. Diwali does not feel complete without abhyang snan. So instead of buying a ready-made ubtan from the market, a fragrant ubtan can be made at home from a few ingredients.
The ingredients needed are chana dal (split chickpeas), masoor dal (red lentils), rice, flaxseed, almonds, neem leaves, sandalwood powder, aama haldi (mango ginger), milk, cow's ghee, honey and rose water.
To begin, roast the chana dal, masoor dal, rice, flaxseed, almonds and neem leaves separately in a pan. Everything is to be roasted on a low flame. Once roasted, set the ingredients aside to cool.
When cool, put everything in a mixer jar and grind to a fine powder. Then sieve the powder. Take the sieved powder in a large bowl and mix in the sandalwood powder and aama haldi. The ubtan is now ready.
Before abhyang snan, take the prepared powder in a small bowl, add a spoonful of milk, cow's ghee, honey and rose water, and mix well. Apply this paste on the skin and massage gently. Then wash off with water.
Each ingredient is said to have its own purpose. Chana dal helps reduce dark marks on the skin. It also exfoliates the skin, making it look bright and clean. Masoor dal is used to reduce tanning on the face and lighten the skin tone. Rice is very rich in antioxidants, which help tighten loose skin.
