Vastu Shastra holds that a toran of mango leaves, Ashoka leaves or cowrie and shells is auspicious, provided it is clean and in good condition.

It is customary to hang a toran on the main door of the home at Diwali and other auspicious occasions. According to Vastu Shastra, tying a toran on the main door has special significance. It is said to let energy into the home. A toran makes the door look attractive and, according to religious belief, creates an atmosphere of auspiciousness in the house.

Many kinds of toran, from mango and Ashoka leaves to cowrie-shell hangings, are regarded as symbols of auspiciousness and prosperity. The question is which toran is considered auspicious for the main door. Each is taken up below.

First, the toran of mango leaves. In Sanatan Dharma, mango leaves are considered auspicious. It is traditional to hang a mango-leaf toran during puja, weddings and festivals. This toran is regarded as a symbol of well-being and prosperity. It is believed that keeping a toran of fresh mango leaves on the main door sustains a positive atmosphere in the home.

The second option is Ashoka leaves, which are used to decorate the main door. They too are linked with auspiciousness and prosperity. A toran of Ashoka leaves can therefore be tied during a festival or any auspicious occasion. While putting it up, one should check that the leaves are fresh and the toran is tied firmly to the door.

For those who want a hanging that can be used again and again, a toran made of cowries, shells or pearls is a good option. The cowrie is associated with Goddess Lakshmi and with wealth and prosperity. Such decorative hangings can enhance the look of the main door during the festival days and can also be part of traditional decoration.

One more point has been made about the toran. According to Vastu Shastra, only a clean toran in good condition should be kept on the main door. If it is broken, covered in dust or has otherwise become old and worn, it should be cleaned or replaced. A toran made of natural leaves can dry out or fade with time, so it should be replaced promptly. Fresh leaves also add to the beauty of the decoration.

Thus, at Diwali, toran of mango leaves, Ashoka leaves, or cowrie and shells are all considered auspicious. The only condition is that the toran be clean and in good condition.
