Woman and two daughters killed as container drags bike 3 km on highway in Mainpuri
A speeding container rammed a motorcycle near Bewar in Mainpuri, killing a mother and her two young daughters; the driver fled after the vehicle caught fire.
A woman and her two young daughters were killed in Uttar Pradesh's Mainpuri district in the early hours of Tuesday when a speeding container hit their motorcycle from behind on the national highway passing through the Bewar area. The bike got stuck in the container's rear wheel and was dragged for three km. The father, who was riding the bike, was seriously injured.
Babi, 32, a sanitation worker at the District Magistrate's office, lives in Kachhpura village under the Mainpuri Kotwali area. On Monday he had gone with his wife Suman and their two daughters to his in-laws' home at Nagla Tankan. Around 4.15 am on Tuesday, he was returning to the village with Suman, four-year-old Priyanshi and one-year-old Divyanshi on the bike. Near Bankiya village, a speeding container coming from behind hit the bike, which got caught in the container's rear wheel.
It is alleged that after the collision the container driver sped up instead of stopping. As a result, Suman and her two daughters were dragged along with the bike for three km. Their bodies were badly mutilated and remains were strewn on the road. Meanwhile, friction set the bike and the container on fire. The container was carrying a consignment of sports shoes, so the fire spread within moments.
The driver is said to have abandoned the container and fled under cover of darkness as soon as it caught fire. Police and a fire brigade team reached the spot after being informed. The fire was brought under control after about 20 minutes. Police then pulled the mutilated bodies of the three out of the container's wheel. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem.
Babi was first admitted to the local health centre in Bewar. As his condition was critical, he was referred to the district hospital, where he is undergoing treatment. Police have seized the container and registered a case against the absconding driver. Police are investigating and searching for him. The deaths of a mother and her two young daughters from one family have plunged the Mainpuri area into mourning.
