Former Supreme Court judge Markandey Katju says CJP leaders erred by signing peace bonds, which he claims could land them in jail for longer if they protest again.
New Delhi: Former Supreme Court judge Markandey Katju has claimed that the troubles of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) are set to grow. According to Katju, the party's leaders made a big mistake by signing peace bonds, and this has raised questions over the future of their movement.
Katju also sharply criticised the decision of Abhijeet Dipke, Saurabh Das and Ashutosh Ranka. He said, "The CJP is now finished."
In an interview to a YouTube channel, Katju spoke at length on the peace bond issue. He said that having signed the bond, the leaders could face legal difficulty if they agitate again. He compared the decision to that of revolutionaries in British Raj times who were made to write apologies.
Katju said signing a peace bond means giving a guarantee to maintain peace. If the leaders agitate again, the question of breaching the bond's conditions could arise. He claimed that, for this reason, the leaders may have to spend a longer time in jail.
Earlier, Saurabh Das and Ashutosh Ranka had spent about a week in jail. According to Katju, if there is another agitation, they could face several months in jail. He also said that out of this fear, CJP leaders will back away from agitation and the organisation's strength will decline.
Katju also claimed that the decision to sign the peace bond has changed the image of CJP leaders before the public. In his view, people began to look differently at revolutionaries who gave apologies in the British era. Similarly, public trust in leaders who signed the peace bond may fall.
Katju made another point about agitations. He said that merely changing faces does not solve the problems of the system. Resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan had been demanded over the paper leak. Katju said the real cause of paper leaks is corruption, so removing the minister alone will not settle the matter.
He also questioned the demand to remove Gyanesh Kumar from his post. He asked how much better the lives of ordinary citizens would become by putting one man in place of another.
Katju claims that on one side lies the role of agitation and on the other the legal hurdles created by the peace bond, and that the organisation is caught in this double bind. His statement is being discussed, and all eyes are on how CJP leaders respond.
