The Anti Land Mafia Squad of Nagpur's crime branch has busted an alleged illegal coal trade operating in the New Kamptee police station area. Five people were arrested and 11.625 tonnes of coal along with other items were seized, with the total value estimated at about Rs 2.30 lakh.

Police had received information that illegal purchase and sale of coal was taking place at a firm called Rahmat Exin, located in Gadda Shivar. The spot lies on the road from Kamptee railway crossing through Gadda village towards Avandi village.

Acting on this information, the crime branch team raided the spot at around 4 am in the presence of panch witnesses. During the raid, police found a large stock of coal and took five people present there into custody. Four two-wheelers were also recovered from the spot.

The arrested accused have been identified as Ahad Feroz Ahmed, Danish Mohammad Akram, Chetan Ramesh Shendre, Kunal Harish Raut and Atulsingh Abhimanyusingh.

Preliminary investigation by police has found that Chetan Shendre, Kunal Raut and Atulsingh stole coal from the Kanhan mine and delivered it to Danish's firm for sale. Police suspect the gang was involved in the illegal purchase and sale of stolen coal to make money.

The raid led to the seizure of 11,625 kg of coal, Rs 10,500 in cash, a weighing scale, four two-wheelers and two mobile phones. The total value of the seized items has been put at about Rs 2.30 lakh.

A case has been registered at the New Kamptee police station. All five arrested accused and the seized property have been handed over to the local police for further investigation.

Police are now investigating where the coal was coming from, the network through which it was being transported, and the scale of the illegal trade.
