An advanced HANA table is being installed from Tuesday in the orthopaedics department of Grant Government Medical College and Sir J.J. Group of Hospitals (JJ Hospital) in Mumbai's Byculla. The aim is to promote modern orthopaedic treatment. The table, described as costing crores of rupees for hip replacement, is the first of its kind in the country, and the distinction has gone to Sir J.J. Hospital.
The table has been donated to the hospital through the Gram Seva Trust by Dr Khusru Patel and his son Dr Shiraz Patel, who works in the United States. Dr Khusru Patel is the oldest alumnus of Sir J.J. Hospital. The table has been brought to the hospital under the guidance of dean Dr Ajay Bhandarwar, medical superintendent Dr Sanjay Surase and orthopaedics department head Dr Nadir Shah.
The table will be inaugurated on Tuesday, on the auspicious occasion of Dussehra. Councillor Makarand Narvekar will be the chief guest. It has been stated that Narvekar gave the hospital administration considerable help in bringing the table into service for patients.
The table will make it easier to perform total hip replacement surgery using a modern technique called the direct anterior approach. The technique causes minimal damage to muscles and may help patients start walking sooner.
The need for hip replacement surgery is growing because of an ageing population, wear and tear of joints and a rising number of hip fractures. Cutting-edge equipment at a government hospital will therefore greatly help in spreading modern treatment methods, training resident doctors and bringing advanced treatment to ordinary patients.
The donation by Dr Khusru Patel and Dr Shiraz Patel has significantly strengthened the modern treatment facilities of the orthopaedics department at JJ Hospital.
