Jeep is preparing to launch a new midsize SUV in the Indian car market. The upcoming model is codenamed JLJ. It will be developed on the ARGOS platform that underpins the Tata Sierra. The launch is expected in the first half of 2028.

The SUV will not, however, be merely a re-badged version of the Tata Sierra. By keeping the design, cabin and interior different, Jeep will try to preserve its brand's distinct identity.

In India, Jeep introduced the Compass in 2017 and the Meridian in 2022. The upcoming midsize SUV could be the company's third big SUV made in India. The platform, some engine options, suspension and other key components may be shared with the Tata Sierra. But the exterior design, body structure, cabin, seats and many interior features are expected to be different. The Jeep Compass and the first-generation Renegade are reportedly being used as reference models for the project.

The Jeep JLJ could come in both petrol and fully electric versions. Both may also get an all-wheel-drive option. However, firm information on engine capacity, power, battery capacity and the range of the electric version has not yet emerged. The company may modify the engine and drive setup in view of the vehicle's weight and customers' needs.

The SUV is being built with Indian customers in mind, but there are also plans to export it. The company is reportedly considering left-hand-drive markets as well as right-hand-drive countries. It is likely to be produced at the Fiat India Automobiles Limited joint venture project in Ranjangaon, rather than at Tata Motors' Sanand plant. With the focus on exports, safety and build quality may also receive attention.

After launch, the Jeep SUV could compete with the Tata Sierra, Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Renault Duster, Nissan Tekton, Volkswagen Taigun, Skoda Kushaq and Honda Elevate. Eyes are on the vehicle because of its separate design, petrol and electric versions and the possible AWD setup. But an official announcement on price, features and final specifications is still awaited. The company has not yet given a firm launch date either.
