Jalgaon: Police raid 9 spots in a day, arrest 10, seize goods worth lakhs
Special police team raided 9 locations across Jalgaon in a single day, arresting 10 people for sand mining, gambling and illicit liquor.
Illegal activities like sand mining, gambling, matka betting and illicit country liquor had been on the rise in Jalgaon city for several days. Police have now carried out a major crackdown. On the orders of District Superintendent of Police Shrikant Dhiware and under the leadership of Sub-Divisional Police Officer Nitin Ganapure, a special team raided 9 different locations across the city in a single day. In the operation, police took 10 accused into custody and seized goods worth a total of 3 lakh 47 thousand 320 rupees from them.
The seized items include a Tata 407 tempo, illegal sand, LED TVs, CPUs, computers, cash and country-made hand-distilled liquor. According to information received, police got a tip-off from an informer that illegal activities were being run at several places in the city. As soon as this information came in, DySP Nitin Ganapure ordered his special team to take action. Police constables Sachin Salunkhe, Awesh Shaikh, Pranay Pawar and Amol Thakur, along with their team and staff from the concerned police stations, carried out raids at various locations in the city.
The biggest action took place in the area under Jilhapeth police station. A Tata 407 tempo was carrying illegal sand between Shivcolony and Akashwani Chowk when police intercepted it on receiving the tip. Goods worth around 2 lakh 69 thousand rupees, including one and a half brass of sand, the tempo and a mobile phone, were seized from them. This is being seen as a major crackdown on sand mining.
In gambling cases, 16 thousand 210 rupees were seized from one location and 13 thousand 700 rupees from another, totalling 29 thousand 910 rupees. Three operations were also carried out in the Mehrun area under MIDC police station. An online chakri gambling den was busted here, from which 32 thousand 80 rupees were seized. Besides this, goods worth 5 thousand and 1 thousand 130 rupees were seized from two Kalyan matka dens. In all, goods worth 38 thousand 210 rupees were seized from Mehrun.
Apart from these, action was also taken against sellers of country-made hand-distilled liquor at some other locations. Police said this drive will continue in the same manner going forward and that no one will be allowed to run illegal businesses in the city. Anyone found running such businesses will face strict action. These 9 operations carried out in a single day have created fear among those running illegal businesses, while ordinary citizens have praised the police for this work.
