Thousands of Indian students hoping to study abroad have had their applications for an Irish student visa rejected because they used AI tools such as ChatGPT to write the application and the personal statement, the Statement of Purpose (SOP). Excessive use of AI has cost many students dearly.

According to the latest figures, 5,100 Indian students applied online this year for student visas to pursue higher education in Ireland. When the Irish embassy and visa officials examined the applications closely, a surprising picture emerged. About 3,300 applications were rejected outright. That means nearly 64 per cent of the Indian students who applied had their visas cancelled immediately because of AI-written text.

The question is how officials detected this. The visa processing system has reportedly become far more advanced. Foreign embassies have special "AI detector" software and tools that can easily tell whether a text was written by a person or generated by a computer. When the files of thousands of students showed similar language, artificial wording and the same pattern of writing, visa officials grew suspicious at once. The embassy believes the AI-written applications lacked the students' real feelings, originality and honesty.

The SOP is the most important document in any visa application. Through it, the foreign government seeks to understand why the student wants to come to that particular country, what the student's financial position is and what the student intends to do after completing the course. Under visa rules, the student must write this letter personally, in their own words.

The Indian students, however, took a shortcut. Instead of doing the work themselves, they had the entire application prepared by AI. The embassy treated this as serious fraud and a lack of formality, took a strict stand and rejected the visas.
