Iran has allowed ships from India, China, Iraq and Qatar to transit the Strait of Hormuz, raising hopes of relief for India's oil and gas supplies.

The conflict in the Middle East has been felt across the world. The United States and Israel together carried out a major attack on Iran. In response, Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz.

About 20 per cent of the world's shipping movement passes through Hormuz, so its closure heightened concern worldwide. The United States made every effort to have Hormuz reopened but could not get it opened, or could not control it.

Global energy supplies are being affected, and in the midst of this there is relief for India. Restrictions remain on ship movement through the Strait of Hormuz, yet Iran has taken the position of giving Indian ships safe passage. This is likely to ease, to some extent, the concern over India's oil and gas supply.

Iran is reported to have permitted ships of a few select countries, including India, to pass through the strait. Ships from India, China, Iraq and Qatar have been allowed to use the route. This opens up the possibility of an important passage for Indian vessels. However, the exemption does not apply to ships of all countries, so the restrictions on maritime movement have not been lifted entirely.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most important oil routes. India imports large quantities of crude oil and natural gas from West Asia. Any disruption of movement on this route can therefore affect the country's energy supply. If Indian ships get safe passage, the transport of crude oil, LPG and other petroleum products will become easier. As a result, the pressure of the energy crisis on India is expected to ease.

The conflict between Iran and the United States has made conditions in the Hormuz region extremely fragile. India has kept up diplomatic contact with both countries. Ensuring the safety of Indian ships and seafarers is a major challenge for the Central government. If the movement of Indian ships through Hormuz continues safely, it could give a big boost to India's international trade and energy security.
