India Post has released the first merit list for the Gramin Dak Sevak (GDS) recruitment 2026. The list has been uploaded on indiapostgdsonline.gov.in. A total of 23,757 vacant posts will be filled through this recruitment. All related updates can also be seen on the official website iapost.gov.in/gdsonlineengagement.

No written examination or interview is held for this recruitment. The government job is meant especially for Class 10 pass candidates. The real process begins only after a name appears on the merit list, so candidates should not stop at seeing their name but should start preparing for the next steps.

To check the list, candidates must visit the website and download the merit list for their state or circle. Pressing Ctrl+F in the list of shortlisted candidates allows them to search for their registration number or name. The post, division and details based on the Class 10 percentage are also shown there.

Many candidates are unaware of the process that follows the merit list. Candidature of selected candidates is often cancelled because of a small lapse or a problem with documents. Along with the joy of seeing their name on the list, preparing for the next stages is therefore necessary.

In the first stage, selected candidates must go to the concerned divisional office with all original documents for document verification. Against each candidate's name, the merit list gives the name of the divisional head and the last date for verification. A message is also sent to the registered mobile number and email.

The time limit must be kept in mind. After the first merit list is out, candidates get 10 to 15 days to report to the designated office with all original documents.

In this round, the numbers and details filled in the application form are matched against the original marksheets and certificates. A provisional verification slip is issued when all documents are found to be in order.

To avoid any rush at the verification centre, candidates should keep their documents ready in advance. Two photocopies of each original document must be carried. These include the Class 10 marksheet and board certificate, the caste certificate (in the Central government format for OBC, SC, ST and EWS), documents related to disability (PwD) and an identity proof (Aadhaar card, PAN card or voter ID). A domicile or residential certificate is also required.

A computer knowledge certificate will also be needed, if it is separate. Candidates who studied the subject in Class 10 are exempt. A certificate of knowledge of the community or local language, that is, the language studied in Class 10, is also required. Candidates should also carry recent colour passport-size photographs, at least 6 to 8 copies.

Many candidates do not know that document verification in the postal department happens twice. The first verification (DV-1) is only a preliminary check. A few days after clearing DV-1, candidates are called for DV-2.

Documents are examined closely at this stage. To check whether the Class 10 marksheet is genuine or fake, it is sent to the concerned education board. A police verification form is also filled in during this time. Candidates are also directed to obtain a medical fitness certificate from a medical officer (CMO) of any government hospital.

After verification at both stages and medical clearance, candidates are sent for 5 to 15 days of practical and system training. Those selected as Branch Postmaster (BPM) receive digital training in operating the 'DARPAN' device, postal transactions, opening accounts, and depositing and withdrawing money.

On completion of training, the postal department issues a formal joining or allotment letter. Candidates must then immediately report to the allotted Branch Post Office (BO) or Sub Post Office (SO) and take charge.
