Kalyan-Taloja Metro 12 is 53.87% complete, MMRDA targets opening by May 2028
Work on the 23.576-km elevated Metro 12 line linking Kalyan with Navi Mumbai has covered 53.87 per cent in two and a half years, MMRDA says.
Another key line is set to join the metro projects under way to speed up travel in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Work on Metro 12 (Kalyan-Dombivli-Taloja), which will connect Kalyan in Thane district with Navi Mumbai, is progressing fast. In just two and a half years, 53.87 per cent of the project has been completed.
According to information given by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), the target is to complete the project and open it to passengers by May 2028.
At present, commuters travelling from Kalyan to Navi Mumbai face heavy traffic jams on the road. Once Metro 12 starts, passengers will be spared these jams, and the journey from Kalyan to Taloja will take only 45 minutes.
The biggest cause of delay in metro projects is usually the lack of land for a car shed. In Metro 12, this hurdle was cleared early. Before work began, about 45 hectares of land was acquired at Nilje-Nilejepada, settling the car shed question. All obstacles were removed on time, which is why work is moving ahead at record pace.
The bhoomipujan of this ambitious project was performed in March 2024 by the then Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, after which the actual work began. According to MMRDA's plan, the remaining work will be completed on schedule and the line will open to the public in 2028. Thousands of daily commuters will find their journeys faster and more comfortable.
The route is being built as an extension of the Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan Metro 5. The entire 23.576-km route will be elevated.
For the convenience of passengers, 19 metro stations are being built along the route. They are Kalyan, APMC Kalyan, Ganesh Nagar, Pisavli Gaon, Golavli, Dombivli MIDC, Sagaon, Sonarpada, Manpada, Hedutane, Kolegaon, Nilje Gaon, Vadavali, Bale, Vakalan, Turbhe, Pisarve Depot, Pisarve and Amdoot (Taloja).
The line will connect with the Navi Mumbai Metro at Taloja, making travel between Kalyan, Dombivli, Thane and Navi Mumbai easier.
