Hyundai and TVS electric three-wheeler expected by late 2027 or early 2028

Hyundai and TVS Motor are jointly developing an electric three-wheeler for India, with plans to build 3,000 to 4,000 units a month across two versions.

Hyundai and TVS Motor are jointly developing a new electric three-wheeler for India. The electric auto-rickshaw is reported to be likely to reach the Indian market in late 2027 or early 2028. The project plans two versions, with a combined target of 3,000 to 4,000 units a month.

Hyundai Motor Company and TVS Motor Company signed a joint development agreement for the project in April 2026. Under the split, Hyundai will focus on its experience in vehicle design and development. TVS Motor will bring its electric three-wheeler platform, along with production, supply chain and Indian market experience. The vehicle is expected to be built at TVS's plant in Hosur, Tamil Nadu.

On production, the plan is to take the combined output of both versions to 3,000 to 4,000 units a month. At full planned scale, 36,000 to 48,000 vehicles could be built a year. However, this is a planned production figure, not a first-year sales target. Early prototypes are planned for early 2027. The actual launch date will depend on testing, certification and production readiness.

Hyundai and TVS showed concepts of an electric three-wheeler and a micro four-wheeler at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo in January 2025. Those concepts included ideas such as adjustable ground clearance for monsoon roads, better thermal management for hot weather, and a flexible interior for both passenger and cargo use. It is still not certain whether all these features will be in the final production model.

The battery capacity, driving range, charging time, motor power and price of the electric rickshaw have not been disclosed. It is therefore hard to say yet how economical it will be for commercial use. After launch in India, its price, ride comfort and daily running cost will be key to its success. The companies have also not announced a final launch date, and these points will become clear only once official information is available.
