Employees of private companies have ESI contributions deducted from their salary every month. Salary slips show a deduction of Rs 200-300 in the name of ESI, but many people wonder whether the company actually deposits this money with the government. At times a company deducts the money but does not deposit it, and trouble follows when the employee later needs to go to a hospital.
There is no longer any need to visit offices for this. Using the Central government's UMANG app, one can check one's ESI account from home. The task takes only two minutes.
The UMANG app brings all government services together in one place. ESIC services are also available on it, which many people are unaware of. First, download the UMANG app from the Play Store on your mobile phone and register with your mobile number. This has to be done only once.
After opening the app, type ESIC in the search bar at the top. An option called Employee Centric Services will appear; click on it. Inside, choose the View Contribution option. Then enter your 10-digit ESI number, or IP Number, which is printed on your salary slip or on the ESI card given by the company. After you enter the number, an OTP will arrive on your mobile phone. Enter it and submit, and your complete ESI history will open.
On selecting the year and period, one can see how many days of work the company showed for you, what salary it showed and how much it paid each month, along with a receipt. It also shows the challan number under which the money was paid. The file can also be downloaded as a PDF. If a company has deducted the money but not deposited it, this becomes known immediately. This lapse occurs in many places.
Besides the UMANG app, the information can also be obtained from the official ESIC IP Portal. After logging in there, one can download the e-Pehchan Card and Health Passbook. The benefit is that it is not necessary to carry the physical card to the hospital; cashless treatment is available on showing the digital card kept on the mobile phone. Many people do not know this and run around for a card.
The arithmetic of ESI is also worth understanding. ESI applies to those whose monthly salary is within Rs 21,000. Only 0.75% is deducted from the employee's salary, while the company pays 3.25%. Together, a total of 4% goes to the government.
For this 4%, the employee gets hospital facilities and medicines for the entire family and, if required, salary as well. These are therefore not small sums; this is money that is rightfully yours. Those in private jobs should take out their salary slip today, note the IP number from it and check on the UMANG app. It will take two minutes, but it will show whether your money is safe. To guard against fraud, make it a habit to check this once every two or three months.
