England captain Harry Brook played a world-record innings against Sri Lanka in a one-day international. He completed his double century in just 114 balls, the fastest in one-day cricket. Riding on his aggressive batting, England piled up 429 for four in their 50 overs.

With this innings, Brook became the first England batter to score a double century in ODIs. He is also the second batter after Glenn Maxwell to make a double century without opening the innings.

The record had so far belonged to Shubman Gill, who completed a double century in 117 balls against the West Indies earlier this year. Ishan Kishan did it in 126 balls against Bangladesh. Brook left both behind and moved to the top of the list of fastest double centuries.

Batters have scored a double century in ODIs 14 times so far. The record for the highest individual score in the format belongs to India's Rohit Sharma, who made 264 against Sri Lanka at Eden Gardens on November 13, 2014.

England won the toss and batted first. Tom Banton and Ben Duckett gave them a good start, adding 74 runs in 80 balls. Banton made 50 in 51 balls with nine fours, while Duckett was out for 29. England were 85 for two by then.

Brook then steadied the innings with Joe Root. The two added 159 runs in 127 balls for the third wicket. Root made 69 in 66 balls with eight fours.

Brook's attack continued after Root was dismissed, this time with Will Jacks for company. The two added 185 runs in just 77 balls for the fourth wicket and took the team to 429.

Brook made 202 in 116 balls, with 10 fours and 21 sixes. Jacks remained not out on 66 in 30 balls, with eight fours and three sixes. For Sri Lanka, Dunith Wellalage took two wickets, while Asitha Fernando and Janith Liyanage took one each.

It was the eighth time England have reached 400 in ODIs. India lead on this count, having crossed the mark nine times. South Africa have made 400 on eight occasions and Australia on three.
