West Indies beat India by five wickets in the third ODI at New Chandigarh on October 3, but India had already won the three-match series 2-1.
West Indies beat India by five wickets in the third and final match of the three-match one-day international series, played at New Chandigarh on October 3. India nevertheless won the series 2-1.
Batting first, India scored 351 for seven. Rohit Sharma made 92 off 82 balls, with 10 fours and three sixes. Ruturaj Gaikwad hit a half-century, scoring 57 off 69 balls.
KL Rahul struck 129 off 87 balls, with 10 fours and four sixes. In the same match, Rahul completed 10,000 international runs. Namandhir added 30 off 21 balls. Rahul's century, however, could not secure India the win.
In reply, West Indies opener and captain Shai Hope stayed at the crease till the end. He faced 143 balls and made 162, with 17 fours and three sixes. Amir Jangoo scored a half-century, making 67 off 56 balls, while Keemo Paul contributed 44 off 35 balls. West Indies reached the target in 48.2 overs and won with five wickets in hand.
After the match, India captain Shubman Gill said, "Many things went well for us. Our team needs to improve in some areas. I was very happy with my team's score. We knew the match would go down to the last ball. That is why I wanted Kuldeep to bowl a few overs till the end. Our fielding could have been better." With these words, Gill pointed to shortcomings in India's bowling and fielding.
Gill also spoke about death bowling. He said, "Even in death bowling, I think sometimes we do not fully realise whether we are attacking or defending, especially when we are bowling in the final overs. In a match like this, if the opposition has lost five or six wickets, you are never fully sure how to set the field. Are we starting death bowling too early, or are we bowling the same way as in the middle overs? I think these are some areas where we definitely need to improve."
