A farmer from Chhattisgarh's Gaurela-Pendra-Marwahi district is drawing attention these days. Shahid Jama Khan, a farmer of Sarabhara gram panchayat in Gaurela development block, moved away from traditional farming, adopted a modern approach and began growing tomato on his two acres of land. He is now earning a profit of lakhs of rupees from it, and his financial condition has changed.

Like other farmers, Khan had grown weary of his circumstances. But instead of sticking to old ways of farming, he adopted new technology. By planting tomato on about two acres, he has so far earned a profit of about Rs 1,20,000. He used modern and improved farming techniques in the tomato crop and gave his farming a new shape.

He paid special attention to crop management. Carrying out farm work on time, looking after the crops regularly and making proper use of scientific techniques gave him particular benefit, and his yield improved.

Thanks to the good yield and proper management, the tomato crop flourished. For Khan, who had grown tired of his circumstances, it brought a new ray of hope, and the crop has become an important source of his income.

Khan said he has benefited from several schemes run by the horticulture department. The department gives him regular information about schemes and also provides technical guidance on improved farming techniques, crop management and essential farming practices.

Amid efforts to connect farmers with modern farming methods, farmers such as Khan have adopted improved technology. Their incomes are rising considerably. His success is plainly visible in this living example. The credit for it goes as much to scientific farming techniques, better crop management and timely technical guidance as to his own hard work. All these factors can play an important role in making farming more profitable.

Khan's story is an example for every farmer who has lost heart. The success he has achieved with improved tomato cultivation has given him the confidence to raise his income further through fruit orchard crops. His initiative has also opened up possibilities of modern and commercial farming for other farmers in the area.
