Frequent burping could signal a deeper stomach problem, doctors warn
Doctors say repeated burping through the day, along with bloating or chest burn, may point to digestive trouble and should not be ignored.
Burping once or twice after a meal is considered normal and most people do not think of it as a problem. But if burping happens repeatedly through the day, along with bloating, gas, a burning sensation in the chest or stomach pain, it could be a sign of some disorder in the digestive system. In such cases, it should not be dismissed as trivial. Eating in the wrong way, eating too quickly, or certain kinds of food can also make the problem of burping worse.
The first and most common reason is swallowing too much air into the stomach. Eating too fast, talking while eating, chewing gum or drinking water through a straw sends extra air into the stomach, leading to more frequent burping. The second reason is carbonated drinks such as soda and sparkling water, which cause gas to build up in the stomach and lead to repeated burping.
Acid reflux is also a major cause. When acid from the stomach rises into the food pipe, it can cause chest burn, sour burps, a burning sensation in the throat and continuous burping. Besides this, overeating or eating fried food or food that is heavy to digest can also cause bloating and gas trouble, which increases burping as well.
Gastritis, that is, inflammation of the stomach's inner lining, can also cause symptoms such as stomach pain, nausea, a feeling of fullness after eating very little, and burping in some people. Also, if someone cannot digest milk or a particular food item properly, eating it can further increase problems such as gas formation and burping.
If burping does not stop at all, or is accompanied by symptoms such as severe stomach pain, repeated vomiting, difficulty swallowing food, weight loss, blood in vomit or a change in stool colour, a doctor should be consulted immediately. And if burping is accompanied by chest pain or difficulty breathing, it should not be ignored as mere gas.
