Waste brought to Ghugus in Chandrapur district for burning at private companies is falling on city roads, and residents want transport rules enforced.

Questions are being raised over the cleanliness and appearance of Ghugus town in Chandrapur district because of foul-smelling waste brought in from outside. For several years, this waste has been brought to Ghugus from Maharashtra and other states to be burned at private companies. It is said that, under the rules, it must be safely transported to the designated site. Even so, incidents of waste falling on the town's roads continue to come to light.

On Thursday, November 5, foul-smelling waste was seen strewn along the road from the government hospital in Ghugus to the police station. People using the road faced considerable difficulty. Complaints keep coming in of waste falling on the road because of the alleged negligence of those transporting it.

Several residents have earlier complained to the officials concerned and demanded action on the problem. But even after repeated complaints, the situation has not improved as much as expected.

Questions are now also being raised about the role of the concerned municipal council officials, elected representatives, the RTO department, the health department and other agencies concerned. Residents demand that waste brought in from outside be transported according to the rules, and that care be taken to ensure none falls on the road during transport.

People are now watching how seriously the departments concerned take this grave problem, and what concrete steps they take to relieve Ghugus of the stench and filth.
