Five mild tremors jolt Koyna dam area in Satara, spark panic
Five mild earthquakes struck near Satara's Koyna dam late at night, with no damage or injury reported
Late at night, earthquake tremors near Satara district's Koyna dam and the surrounding area disturbed residents' sleep. Around 12 midnight, five mild tremors were felt one after another, causing brief panic among people in the area.
According to official records from the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the intensity of these tremors ranged between 2.1 and 2.4. The quake's epicentre was at a depth of 5 kilometres underground.
This is not the first time tremors have been felt in this area. An earthquake had also struck here five to six months ago. This brought back memories of an old event for local people. In 1967, a severe earthquake in Satara had killed thousands of people in this area, and the new tremors have revived that old fear.
People in the area were briefly frightened by the sudden tremors, but the administration has appealed to citizens not to panic. The administration says the earthquake caused no loss of life or property. The Koyna dam management has also clarified that the dam is completely safe and there is no danger of any kind.
Earlier, tremors were also felt in Surgana taluka of Nashik district on 19 September 2026, measuring 3.3 on the Richter scale.
The Koyna dam area has long been considered earthquake-sensitive, and local residents become alert after every such tremor. The administration is currently monitoring the situation and has asked people to remain calm and not pay attention to rumours.
