Fadnavis says Congress holds Constitution in hand but acts against it, at BJP march in Nagpur
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis attacked Rahul Gandhi in Nagpur at a BJP march under its "Save Democracy, Remove Anarchy" campaign.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis launched a sharp attack on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in Nagpur on Thursday, November 5, 2026. The occasion was the BJP's "Lokatantra Bachao, Arajakta Hatao" (Save Democracy, Remove Anarchy) campaign. Fadnavis alleged that the Congress displays the Constitution in hand while working against its principles.
Fadnavis said that holding a copy of the Constitution while remaining engaged in activities that weaken constitutional institutions has become an old habit of the Congress. This is his allegation.
His remarks come at a time when the confrontation between the BJP and the Congress over the Constitution, democratic institutions and the functioning of the Election Commission is growing.
The BJP held the march in Nagpur as part of its nationwide "Save Democracy, Remove Anarchy" campaign. It was led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari. Its aim is stated to be to respond to the Opposition's allegations about constitutional institutions and the election process.
Through the campaign, the BJP wants to put forward what it describes as an effort by Opposition parties to create distrust towards democratic institutions.
The political fight over the Constitution is not new. Fadnavis has on several earlier occasions accused Rahul Gandhi and the Congress of weakening constitutional institutions while claiming to protect the Constitution.
On the other side, the Congress has questioned the BJP's commitment to constitutional values. It has also accused the ruling party of using the Constitution as a political tool.
The latest exchange reflects the growing political confrontation between the two parties. The Constitution and democratic institutions have emerged as the main issues in each side's campaign.
