A major fake number plate racket has been uncovered in Kalamna, Nagpur. The Crime Branch's anti-vehicle theft team seized four trucks that were running on a single registration number. Goods worth about Rs 55.10 lakh were recovered in the action. A father and son have been arrested, and one accused is absconding.

The fake plate case came to light during a check by the team on the night of October 5 in the parking area of the Kalamna market. Eicher truck number MH/40/CT/8683 is genuine, but fake plates bearing the same number had been made and fitted on three other trucks as well. Police seized four trucks from the spot. They also recovered 210 sacks of Parle-G biscuits and rice from the vehicles.

Police arrested Rajendra Singh Satnam Singh Randhawa (51) and his son Sukhdev Singh Rajendra Singh Randhawa (24), residents of Surya Nagar, Kalamna. Their associate Shiva Singh Laxman Jadhav of Raipur, Chhattisgarh, is said to be absconding. The accused had made fake number plates, fitted them on the vehicles and were running them on the road without registration.

Kalamna police have registered a case under the relevant sections and the Motor Vehicles Act and started an investigation.

The father and son are truck drivers. They said they had been unable to pay the loan instalments on three vehicles, so they were running them with the number plate of one vehicle fitted on the other three.

According to sources, hundreds of vehicles are running in the city with fake number plates in this manner, and RTO officials are also involved. Similar cases have surfaced earlier. Police are said to focus more on extortion than on investigation. Only a thorough probe of the racket can identify the real masterminds.
