Dussehra is being celebrated today, October 20, 2026. The festival falls every year on the Dashami of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Ashwin. It is also called Vijayadashami. There are two names, but the festival is the same.

It is said that on this day Goddess Durga slayed Mahishasura and Lord Ram killed Ravan. For this reason the day is called the victory of good over evil. The day is one of the three and a half auspicious muhurats, so buying anything new today is considered highly auspicious.

For those wondering what to buy on Dussehra to bring prosperity to the home, here is a guide.

The first item is gold and silver. Buying gold or silver on Dussehra is a very old tradition. It is believed that if a small gold coin, a ring, or a silver bowl or coin comes home today, Lakshmi stays in the house. Even on a tight budget, a small silver coin should be bought.

The second item is a new vehicle. Many people wait all year for Dussehra because it is a siddha muhurat. It is said that a car, bike or any vehicle bought today stays safe from accidents and proves auspicious. For this reason showrooms also see heavy crowds today.

The third item is copper and brass utensils. Not everyone can buy gold or a vehicle. In that case copper or brass utensils can be bought for the home. Buying such utensils for the kitchen is also considered very auspicious, and it is said to bring health and happiness to the home.

The fourth item is a new broom. It may sound unusual, but bringing home a new broom on Dussehra is considered very auspicious. The broom is described as a symbol of Lakshmi. It is believed that bringing a new broom removes poverty and negative energy from the home and keeps it clean.

The fifth item is a shami plant. The shami tree has great significance on Dussehra. Buying a shami plant and planting it at home, or worshipping it, is considered very beneficial. Shami leaves are given to one another as gold. It is said that if there is a shami at home, Vastu dosh is also removed.

The sixth item is books and notebooks. If there are young children at home, buying new books, religious texts, pens or notebooks for them today is considered good. It is said that this helps children progress in their studies, increases knowledge and brings the grace of Saraswati.

The seventh item is new clothes. It is customary on Dussehra to buy new clothes for everyone at home. If new clothes are bought for parents and children, the home has a happy atmosphere.

Shopping alone is not enough; some tasks should also be done at home. Clean the whole house in the morning. Tie a toran of mango leaves on the door and make a beautiful rangoli. Worship Lord Ram and Goddess Durga in the home shrine with a sincere heart. If you have weapons, worship them too. Reciting the Ram Raksha Stotra, Durga Chalisa or Aditya Hridaya Stotra on this day is considered very good.

Worship the shami tree and exchange its leaves and apta leaves with one another as greetings. In the evening, light a four-faced lamp at home. It is said that this removes Vastu dosh from the home and brings positive energy. If you have vehicles, books or tools, clean them, apply haldi-kumkum and worship them as well.
