Police have arrested Gajanan Meshram, 32, under rape and POCSO Act provisions for an alleged assault on a 17-year-old girl at a house in Kalamna on November 1.

A serious case of alleged rape of a minor girl has come to light within the limits of Kalamna police station in Nagpur. The crime is alleged to have been committed in broad daylight after the accused entered a house. The incident has once again raised questions about the safety of women and girls in the city.

Police have arrested Gajanan Meshram, 32, in the case. According to the police, the incident took place in the afternoon of November 1. The victim is 17 years old and a minor.

Police said the girl was alone at home at the time. The accused allegedly entered the house from the side of the back room, caught the girl by the throat and dragged her into the bedroom. When the girl resisted and shouted, the accused throttled her and threatened to kill her, police said.

He then allegedly assaulted her by force and fled the spot. After he left, the girl told her parents what had happened. She then went to Kalamna police station and lodged a complaint.

On receiving the complaint, police registered a case under the rape provisions and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Meshram has been arrested in this case. He has not merely been detained; a formal arrest has been made.

Further investigation is under way. As the law does not permit the identity of a minor victim to be disclosed, her name, address and other details are not being given.
