Chandrapur City police have registered a case against three people accused of taking Rs 34.53 lakh from a man on the promise of a peon's job at a Nagpur post office.
A case has been registered at Chandrapur City police station against three people on charges of cheating by promising a job. According to police, the complainant was promised a peon's job at a post office in Nagpur. He says he paid a total of Rs 34,53,600 for it.
Police have booked the accused under Sections 3(5) and 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Sub-inspector Prakash Nikde is investigating.
According to police, the complainant, Yashmeet Budhaji Bageshwar, is 35 and lives in Tukum Chavan Colony, WCL Quarters, Chandrapur. He currently works as a security guard with a private agency at the Datala MIDC. His grandmother sold vegetables in the Ganjward market, and he sold vegetables with her from childhood. During this time he frequented the disposable-ware shop of the accused Ketan Jorgewar, and the two became well acquainted.
According to the complaint, in January 2024 Ketan Jorgewar told him that peon posts had come up at a Nagpur post office and that he arranged government jobs. He said it would cost Rs 22 lakh to Rs 24 lakh. The complainant's vegetable business was doing well, so he had the money.
It is alleged that the accused called him to their home and said the officer in charge of postings was in Delhi and money would have to be sent to him. After this, they kept taking money from him from time to time in cash, by bank cheque and through PhonePe.
The complaint also says the accused initially claimed that a man in Nagpur had already been selected for the post but had developed cancer and would not take the job. He told the complainant that if he paid the same amount, the vacancy would be put in his name. Under the accused's continued demands and trusting that a job order would come soon, the complainant even mortgaged his own plot. On June 12, 2024, he gave Rs 2 lakh to Reema Jorgewar. According to the complainant, he paid the accused a total of Rs 34,53,600 in cash, online into bank accounts and by cheque.
Meanwhile, the complainant found five gold rings missing from his home. In the storage compartment of a moped he found a Muthoot Finance slip. Inquiries revealed that Ketan Jorgewar had pledged the rings with Muthoot Finance and taken money. When the complainant went to ask him about it, Ketan gave evasive answers, switched off his mobile phone and absconded.
When the complainant then threatened to go to the police, the accused returned to Chandrapur and redeemed and returned the rings. But when the Rs 34,53,600 paid for the job was demanded back, the accused agreed to return only Rs 16 lakh and asked for two months' time.
According to the complaint, more than two years have passed and the money has not been returned. When the complainant went to ask for it, the accused abused him and also pushed and shoved the women of his household. Realising he had been cheated, the young man filed a complaint, on which Chandrapur City police have registered the case. No arrest had been mentioned by the time the report was written.
