Cockroach found in food at Mumbai five-star hotel shocks cardiologist
Dr Ashok Seth found a cockroach on his table while dining at JW Marriott Sahar's Romano restaurant and left his meal unfinished
A well-known doctor got a rude shock while dining at the Romano restaurant inside the JW Marriott hotel in Mumbai's Sahar area. Dr Ashok Seth, chairman and cardiologist at Fortis Escorts Heart Institute, spotted a small cockroach moving around on his table while having dinner at the restaurant on Saturday night. The presence of a cockroach at a five-star hotel raised questions about hygiene at the establishment.
Dr Seth playfully named the cockroach "Rochi." He remarked that despite his best efforts to shoo it away, the cockroach refused to move from the table, joking that it perhaps wanted pizza instead of pasta. However, he said the incident put him off his food, and he left the restaurant without finishing his meal.
Dr Seth recorded the entire incident on his phone and posted the video on social media, using it to raise a clear objection about the lack of hygiene at the hotel. In his post, he wrote that while he was dining at the Romano restaurant at JW Marriott, Sahar, on Saturday night, a baby cockroach named "Rochi" came onto his table and tried to help itself to his food. He noted that despite repeated attempts to get rid of it, "Rochi" would not leave.
In the same post, Dr Seth urged Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) official Tukaram Mundhe to take action in the matter. He also tagged the Maharashtra FDA, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and the hotel's management, demanding strict action be taken.
Asked about a detailed inquiry into the incident, the JW Marriott hotel's customer service department said the matter would be looked into. However, the hotel's kitchen has not issued any official statement so far, leaving questions about kitchen hygiene unanswered.
The incident at the five-star hotel is being described as highly objectionable. Such lapses in cleanliness have once again raised concerns about the health and safety of the public. With the Maharashtra FDA cracking down on and cancelling licences of well-known hotels, questions are now being asked over whether similar action will be taken against the Romano restaurant at JW Marriott, Sahar.
