Elders say a pinch of cinnamon powder blown into the home from the threshold after Lakshmi Puja on November 8 is believed to bring prosperity.
Diwali is incomplete without Lakshmi Puja. On this day people worship Goddess Lakshmi wholeheartedly, as it is believed that the running of the household depends on her grace. When Lakshmi is pleased, no one has to ask others for help to celebrate the festival.
Elders say that a small remedy performed after Lakshmi Puja keeps the home prosperous. All it needs is a quarter teaspoon of cinnamon powder, finely ground.
The remedy is to be performed on the evening of Lakshmi Puja, after the worship is over. First, open the main door of the house. Then stand on the threshold outside the door, facing the inside of the house.
Place the quarter teaspoon of cinnamon powder on the palm of the right hand. Close your eyes and silently take the name of Goddess Lakshmi. Tell the goddess whatever you wish for in your mind, such as money coming into the house, the business growing or a debt being cleared. Pray that the wish is fulfilled soon.
Then blow on the powder with full devotion, so that it flies into the house and falls on the floor.
Let the powder lie there for the whole night. Do not sweep it or step on it. It should remain in the house all night.
The next morning, gently gather it up on a piece of paper or a cloth. Do not throw it in the trash by mistake. Put it in a flowerpot outside or among the nirmalya (used puja offerings).
According to an old belief, cinnamon has the power to attract money and positive energy. It is believed that this brings back money that was stuck, brings growth in business and ends the household's financial strain. It is also held that cinnamon flying from the palm into the house is as if welcoming Lakshmi herself into the home.
This year, 2026, Diwali has a special alignment. On Sunday, November 8, 2026, Naraka Chaturdashi and Lakshmi Puja fall on the same day. The remedy can therefore be performed on the evening of November 8, after Lakshmi Puja.
It is also said that the remedy need not be done only on Diwali. It can be performed on the evening after each month's Amavasya (new moon day). It is said that this keeps the home positive and keeps money flowing in.
