Many people take long holidays during the festival season to visit their families. Those planning rail travel in October need to take some care in advance. Central Railway has begun a special ticket checking drive from October 1 to October 31.

The main rule of the drive is "one ticket, one original ID". Railway officials have clarified that it will no longer be enough for passengers to hold only a ticket. They must also carry an original identity card.

If no identity card is found during checking, the journey of all passengers travelling on the ticket alone will be treated as irregular, and a fine may be imposed. Passengers should therefore carry an identity card or any ID in their purse so that they can show it directly if the TTE asks. They should follow railway rules for a smooth journey.

Those travelling on a quota or a special concession will first have to prove their eligibility by showing original documents. Failing to do so may result in a fine. Daily commuters who travel on a railway e-pass will also have to show their identity card to the TTE.

The checking is not limited to sleeper or AC trains. The same rules apply to general coaches. The TTE will also inspect the tickets of those travelling in general compartments, and, if required, can verify a ticket with the help of an app.

The railway has said the main aim of the drive is to curb fraud in railway operations. Passengers should therefore carry their ticket, identity card and, where needed, quota, concession or e-pass papers, to avoid trouble during checking and escape a fine.
