The Union Cabinet on Wednesday decided to raise the minimum support price (MSP) of six rabi crops. At the same meeting, funds totalling more than Rs 2,79,157 crore were approved for three major schemes. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the decisions.

According to Vaishnaw, the MSP of wheat for the 2027-28 rabi season has been raised by Rs 25 per quintal. After the increase, the support price of wheat will be Rs 2,610 per quintal. The government says this will ensure farmers get a fair price for their crop.

The minister also said the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices had recommended the new MSP for six major rabi crops. For the rabi price policy, the Cabinet has cleared Rs 90,962 crore. This amount has been fixed for the 2027-28 rabi season.

Among the other crops, the biggest increase is for safflower (kusum, also called kardai), whose MSP was raised by Rs 675 per quintal. The MSP of mustard has gone up by Rs 413 per quintal, while that of lentil (masur) has risen by Rs 390 per quintal. Prices of linseed have been raised by Rs 136 and of gram by Rs 83 per quintal.

According to the government, the aim of raising MSP is to increase farmers' profit from their produce and to encourage the cultivation of different crops. Special emphasis is being placed on raising the production of pulses and oilseeds.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the government is leaving no stone unturned in protecting the interests of farmers across the country and raising their incomes. He said it was with this aim that the government approved the increase in MSP of rabi crops for the 2027-28 marketing season. According to Modi, this will ensure that lakhs of farmers across the country get a remunerative price for their produce.

The Cabinet has also approved Rs 1,86,405 crore for the PM DHARA scheme. Its full name is given in the source as Developing Harmonized and Accelerated Renewable Energy Access. The government says it will help expand access to renewable energy.
