Anyone who rides a bike knows the strain of a heavy helmet: the neck starts to ache and the head feels weighed down. Vega Auto, a Belagavi company, has brought out a new helmet as a remedy. It is called Exor X Carbon. The company says it is the lightest helmet in the world to have won three certifications.
The helmet was unveiled at a large event in Belagavi. It weighs only 1,050 grams, a little over a kilogram. It is said that a rider barely feels it is being worn.
Many may think a lighter helmet is a less safe one. The company says safety has not been compromised even by one per cent. The helmet is made of carbon fibre, which is strong and very light.
The helmet has received three major international certifications: ECE 22.06, DOT and India's ISI. Getting all three is not easy, and it means the helmet has passed safety tests of international standard. The company says it is ideal for off-road riding, and that no one else in the world has made an off-road helmet this light with three certifications.
Those who ride long distances, or in the mountains and on rough roads, know the value of a light helmet. A heavy helmet puts heavy strain on the neck, which begins to stiffen after a while. The company said that with this 1,050-gram helmet the discomfort is greatly reduced, so riders can ride for hours.
The company said making the helmet was not easy. The aim was not just to cut weight. How to use carbon fibre, how to structure the helmet and how to manufacture it all had to be balanced. Keeping both safety and weight in check was the real challenge.
The helmet was both designed and manufactured in Belagavi, with nothing brought in from outside. Dilip Chandak, chairman of Vega Auto, said: "We have been working in carbon fibre for many years. This product, made in India, is of world-class quality and shows the strength of our engineering."
Girdhari Chandak, the company's managing director, said: "Our aim was not merely to make a light helmet. We wanted to make a safe helmet by making the right use of three things: material, design and production, and we have succeeded in that."
Uttam Chandak, Kunal Chandak, Parth Chandak and all the company's officers and employees attended the event. The helmet, made in Belagavi, will now be sold around the world.
