Beed: Brother dies by suicide over fees after sister scores 99.99% in class 10
A 16-year-old in Beed district's Bobdewadi village killed himself, worried his family would have to sell its only acre of land to fund his and his sister's education.
A tragic incident has come to light from Bobdewadi village in Kej taluka of Beed district. A 16-year-old boy studying in class 10 died by suicide at home, hanging himself amid stress over poverty and the cost of further education. The boy has been identified as Akash Nitin Bobde. Just as the family was celebrating his sister's success, the incident plunged the entire Kej area into grief.
According to information received, Akash's sister, Kumari Srushti Bobde, scored 99.99 percent in the class 10 board examination in March 2026. It was a major achievement and there was an atmosphere of joy in the household. But it also raised a big question for the family: how to afford the cost of further education.
Akash's father runs the household by driving a rickshaw under difficult circumstances. The Bobde family owns only one acre of land. With no benefit of reservation available and the family's financial condition very poor, bearing the cost of further education for both children was becoming almost impossible. The household was in constant financial strain.
There was talk in the family of selling that one acre of land to fund the further education and fees of both children. Seeing this discussion and the family's distress, 16-year-old Akash became deeply stressed. He began to feel that it was because of his education that his father and family were being pushed to sell their land. Broken by this thought, Akash ended his life by hanging himself at home.
On one side was a talented sister's step toward higher education, and on the other, because of poverty, the final act of a mere 16-year-old brother -- this has left Bobdewadi and the whole of Beed district in mourning.
Based on a complaint by Akash's uncle, Daulat Bobde, a case of accidental death has been registered at Kej police station. After a post-mortem at Kej's sub-district hospital, Akash's last rites were performed on September 22.
