Central government employees and pensioners have some good news ahead of the end of September. Salaries and pensions, which usually come in on the last working day of the month, will this time be credited earlier. The government has decided that salary, wages and pension for September 2026 will be released on September 25, 2026 itself. The decision was taken because of fears that a nationwide bank strike could disrupt banking operations.

A three-day nationwide bank strike has been called from September 28 to September 30, 2026. The strike is expected to affect banking transactions and clearing services. To ensure government employees and pensioners do not face a cash crunch at the end of the month, the finance ministry decided in advance to release the salary and pension early. According to an official message from the finance ministry, all central government offices, Pay and Accounts Offices (PAO) and the concerned banks have been instructed to release salary and pension on Friday, September 25.

It is also worth noting that September 26 is the fourth Saturday and September 27 is a Sunday. Right after that, bank employees will be on strike from September 28 to 30. This means a continuous stretch of holidays followed by a strike at the end of the month could significantly affect banking operations. This is why the government chose to make the payment on September 25 in advance.

Besides salary and pension, in view of the half-yearly closing for September, other financial payments and transactions have also been ordered to be completed ahead of time. Concerned departments have been asked to complete necessary processes in advance, since the strike could cause problems towards the end of the month.

It is important to understand that the salary, wages or pension paid on September 25 will be treated as an "advance payment". This means that once the final salary for September is calculated, any difference or adjustment required will be accounted for the following month. The government has clearly stated that if any difference emerges in the final salary or pension, it will be adjusted against the October 2026 salary or pension, with no exceptions.

Another decision has been taken so that the general public does not have to go without banking services for several consecutive days because of the strike. On Sunday, September 27, 2026, all public sector banks (PSBs) and regional rural banks (RRBs) across the country will remain open as on a regular working day. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has given special approval for bank branches, currency chests and ATM-linked branches to remain open as usual on September 27, so that people can complete essential banking work before the strike.

The question is why bank employees are going on a three-day strike. There are several demands, the biggest being the implementation of a five-day banking week. The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), which represents nearly 90 percent of bank employees, has announced the three-day nationwide strike. If the strike goes ahead, routine work at many bank branches could come to a halt between September 28 and 30. This is why the central government decided to release salaries and pensions for its employees in advance. Overall, given the disruption that could arise from the bank strike, the fourth Saturday and the Sunday together, the government has arranged to make the payment on September 25 itself, though this will be treated as an advance, with the final accounting, if needed, done in the October 2026 salary or pension.
