Residents of Akola are buying electric vehicles in large numbers. Rising inflation, climbing petrol and diesel prices and the search for an eco-friendly option are cited as the three reasons.

According to the sub-regional transport office, a total of 10,148 e-vehicles were registered in the district between April 2025 and September 2026. Over the past two years in particular, sales of electric two-wheelers have seen a good jump during festival seasons such as Diwali and Dussehra.

Rising fuel prices, good mileage on a single charge, a classic look and a craze for the vehicles have increased people's inclination towards electric vehicles considerably over the past three years. As a result, registrations of electric and hybrid vehicles have risen sharply. The total number of e-vehicles increased between 2024 and 2026 compared with 2023. Customers have preferred the pure EV category, which runs entirely on batteries, the most.

In environmental terms, these e-vehicles can save as much pollution as the carbon that about 70 to 80 lakh trees absorb in a year.

Owing to petrol and diesel prices and awareness about the environment, demand for hybrid technology is also considerable. The number of both strong hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles has nearly doubled in a year. Because of the growing trend, demand for electric vehicles generally rose as early as the beginning of 2026.

The engine of an electric vehicle is simpler than that of a conventional vehicle. Demand for e-vehicles is also growing in view of the possibility that prices will fall in future. However, some difficulties remain. The shortage of charging stations and the comparatively higher price are the biggest hurdles. The government and private companies are trying to increase charging stations. Improvements in technology are also expected to bring down the prices of electric vehicles.

Electric two-wheelers in the market start at Rs 50,000. Depending on the quality of the vehicle and battery capacity, two-wheelers are available up to Rs 1.5 lakh. As electricity is cheaper than petrol and diesel, fuel is saved.

The Government of India is running several schemes to promote electric vehicles. These include subsidies, low-interest loans and grants for installing charging stations in home garages.
