In the Satara District Central Cooperative Bank elections, the nomination papers of directors who had completed ten years in office were declared invalid. The decision has set off discussion in the Sangli District Central Cooperative Bank elections as well.

Sanjay More had approached the court over the nominations of directors who had completed ten years in the Satara bank polls. In that matter, the Kolhapur circuit bench ruled that the nominations of the directors concerned were invalid. Talk has now begun on whether the same could happen in the Sangli district bank.

After the ruling, questions are being raised over the candidacy of four directors in Sangli. It is not yet clear whether the Satara bank ruling will have a direct bearing on candidacy in Sangli. The cooperative sector is therefore watching the legal developments.

Scrutiny of nomination papers for the Sangli District Central Cooperative Bank elections was held on October 5. The returning officer announced the official decision on October 6. In that process, the nominations of some directors who had completed ten years were declared invalid. It is learnt that those concerned neither lodged an objection against the decision nor approached the court.

Among the directors who filed nominations in the Sangli district bank despite having completed ten years as directors are MP Vishal Patil, Sangramsinh Deshmukh, Balasaheb Honmore and Mahendra Lad. Following the Satara bank ruling, discussion on the candidacy of these four has begun in political and cooperative circles.

The Satara and Sangli bank cases are separate. A ruling in one will therefore not necessarily affect the other election automatically. The picture is likely to become clear only on the basis of the relevant legal provisions and further court developments.

Against the backdrop of the Satara bank ruling, MLA Sadabhau Khot has also put forward his position. Khot said that although the scrutiny of nominations in the Sangli district bank and the Satara bank case are separate matters, he has already gone to court on this issue.

The decision taken by the returning officer, the related legal provisions and court developments have therefore gained importance. All eyes are now on what effect the Satara bank ruling has on candidacy in Sangli.
