A 61-year-old man died after his motorcycle fell into a pit dug in the middle of a road in Rajiv Nagar in Nashik. The deceased has been identified as Prakash Vandeshkar. According to preliminary information, he could not make out the pit in the darkness at night and his motorcycle fell straight into it.
The accident occurred while Vandeshkar was riding from the Kalanagar side towards Rajiv Nagar. Work was under way on the road where the accident happened, and a large pit had been dug in the middle of the road for it. The area was dark at night. Preliminary information is that this is why Vandeshkar did not see the pit and the motorcycle fell into it.
After the motorcycle fell into the pit, Vandeshkar suffered serious injuries to the head and other parts of the body. He is reported to have died on the spot because of these injuries.
Indiranagar police reached the spot immediately on receiving news of the accident. Police have registered a case and begun further investigation.
Following the accident, people are questioning the safety of the work being done by the administration and the contractor concerned that dug up the road. According to information, barricades and signboards had been put up by the administration because road work was under way. But people are asking whether these safety arrangements were adequate for those driving at night.
Citizens are demanding that more effective measures be taken to protect motorists at road excavation sites. Meanwhile, Indiranagar police are investigating exactly what the conditions were at the time of the accident and whether the safety arrangements around the pit were adequate.
The incident in Rajiv Nagar has once again raised questions about the precautions taken during road work, and only the police investigation will make clear what the conditions actually were at the time of the accident.
