Work to make Zilla Parishad schools in Nagpur district digital is under way, and facilities such as computer libraries are being provided. But the other side of the picture is that classrooms in many school buildings are in a dilapidated state.
There are 1,509 schools under the Nagpur Zilla Parishad in the district. A survey covered a total of 5,171 classrooms in these schools. It found 3,710 classrooms in good condition, which means the remaining classrooms have problems of one kind or another.
The survey of the district's ZP schools found that, of 1,461 classrooms, 588 will have to be rebuilt immediately and 873 need urgent repairs.
The survey also found 307 toilets in poor condition, some of them in an extremely bad state. This has raised questions about the safety and health of students in these schools.
In some places water leaks from the roof, while in others the walls are damp and cracked. Adequate funds are also needed urgently to fix these.
According to information from the department, repair work is currently under way on 350 classrooms in 128 schools with more than 100 students each. The work is being done by giving priority to schools with more students.
In addition, repairs in the 166 schools with the greatest need are planned for the financial year 2026-27. The target is to complete the remaining work in 2027-28 and 2028-29.
Meanwhile, Zilla Parishad CEO Vinayak Mahamuni has decided to renovate 200 schools in the district under Mission Sanjeevani. The initiative will cover necessary repairs, painting and improvements to basic facilities in the schools. The aim is to give students a safe, clean and attractive learning environment.
On one side, schools are being made digital, while on the other, the dilapidated condition of buildings and a lack of basic facilities leave in doubt whether children will get to study in a safe and healthy environment.
