The redevelopment of Dharavi has now begun on the ground. Ten high-rise buildings for Dharavi residents will come up on railway land in Matunga. Work on the project began on Monday.

The bhoomi pujan was performed by Pranav Adani, director of Adani Enterprises. Asim Gupta, Additional Chief Secretary of the Urban Development Department, and Mahendra Kalyankar, head of the Dharavi Redevelopment Project, were also present.

The entire redevelopment of Dharavi is being carried out by Adani Navbharat Developers, a company of the Adani Group. The railways own 22 acres of land in Matunga, where work on homes for railway employees is already under way. Work has now started on 10 buildings for eligible Dharavi residents in the same area. The buildings will have 37 to 39 floors.

The buildings will have a total of 10,432 homes. Besides homes, 1,379 commercial and industrial units will also be built, which will help people keep their livelihoods.

According to information provided by ANDPL, the 10 buildings will be handed over to the government in three phases, not all at once. The first five buildings will be completed by March 2029. The next two will be completed by August 2029 and the remaining three by August 2030, and handed over to the DRP. After completion, the company will maintain the buildings for the first 10 years. Lifts, water and common facilities will all be its responsibility.

Each home will measure 350 square feet. Each building will have 10 to 12 lifts, and two separate lifts have been provided for the shop and factory units. Residents will also get an auditorium, gardens, a society office, a children's play area and a place of worship.

Ten per cent of the commercial space in each building will be reserved for its maintenance. The rent from it will meet the building's expenses, so ordinary residents will not be burdened. When the project is complete, the face of Dharavi will change and thousands of families will get a permanent home of their own.
